Hydrogen Masers with Cavity Frequency Switching Servos
نویسنده
چکیده
The stability of the free-running hydrogen maser is limited by pulling of the unperturbed hydrogen transition frequency due to instability of the cavity resonance frequency. Zh~o automatic approaches to cavity stabiliz@zzatlon have been used successfully infield operabb atomic hydrogen masers in the past. One method is based upon the '!~pin-exchan@" tuning procedure and was wed in marers constructed at NASA's Goddard Space F1igh.t 2] The other method iv the cavity frequency switching servo wed on Sigma Tau Standards Corporah'on (STSC) hydrogen ma~ers.[~* 4' ' 1 While automatic spinachunge tuning is in principk the more basic and accurate method, the required beam intensity switching and the long servo time constant resuk in reduced stabilify for measuring intervals up to 1 o6 seconds. More importantly, the spin-exchange tuning method requires a second stabh frequenq source as a reference, idealty a second hydrogen maser, to get the best results. The caviry frequemy switching servo, on the other hand, has very litth e$ect on the maser short term stabiliQ, and isjust enough to correct for cavity dr$ while maintuining the cuvity at the spinachange tuned oflet required to minimize instabilio due to beam intensity fluctuations. Not only does the cavity frequency switching servo not require a second stable frequenq source, but the frequency reference is the atomic hydrogen radiated beam signal, so that no extra RF connectiom need be made to the cavity, and externally generakd signah that wouldperturb the hydrogen atom need not be transmitted through the cavity. In this paper we will discuss the operation of the cavity frequenq swilching stabilization method and will i h t ra te the transknt response of the servo and certain other uspects olthe technique that have potentid for achieving improved basic accuracy. We also willgive stability results obtained between masers at STSC and long term stcrbie data obtuined with STSC hydropn masers at the United States Naval Observatory.

Fast cavity auto-tuning systems for hydrogen masers
2014 An auto-tuning system for the microwave cavity of hydrogen masers is considered. It is shown that it can be applied to oscillating masers. A tight control of the cavity resonant frequency is insured, with a short time constant. This is favourable to the improvement of the long term frequency stability of this frequency standard. Operating conditions exist which do not perturb the ultimatel...
متن کاملUltrastable laser with average fractional frequency drift rate below 5 × 10⁻¹⁹/s.
Cryogenic single-crystal optical cavities have the potential to provide high dimensional stability. We have investigated the long-term performance of an ultrastable laser system that is stabilized to a single-crystal silicon cavity operated at 124 K. Utilizing a frequency comb, the laser is compared to a hydrogen maser that is referenced to a primary caesium fountain standard and to the 87Sr op...
متن کاملDouble-resonance frequency shift in a hydrogen maser
We use the dressed-atom formalism to calculate the frequency shift in a hydrogen maser induced by applied radiation near the Zeeman frequency, and find excellent agreement with a previous calculation made in the bare-atom basis. The maser oscillates on the DF51, DmF50 hyperfine transition, while the applied field is swept through the F51, DmF561 Zeeman resonance. We determine the effect of the ...
متن کاملTesting local position invariance with four cesium-fountain primary frequency standards and four NIST hydrogen masers.
We report the most sensitive tests to date of the assumption of local position invariance (LPI) underlying general relativity, based on a 7 yr comparison of cesium and hydrogen atomic clocks (frequency standards). The latest results place an upper limit that is over 20 times smaller than the previous most sensitive tests; this is consistent with the null shift predicted by LPI. The result is ba...
متن کاملA Kalman Filter Clock Algorithm for Use in the Presence of Flicker Frequency Modulation Noise
NPL has developed a Kalman-filter-based clock algorithm for combining measurements from its three active hydrogen masers. The algorithm is designed to produce a near optimal composite when the dominant noise process present is flicker frequency modulation (FFM). The FFM is modelled approximately by a linear combination of Markov noise processes. Each Markov process is included in the Kalman fil...
